Kon River- Upper Valley Stretch
Section Length: ~ 7 km
Put In: bridge below Song Kon 2 Dam Take Out: 14-G bridge |
Difficulty: I
Est. Flow: any (minimum apx. 300 cfs) Paddlers: Not Yet Finished |
The only realistic run in the upper part of the Song Kon basin is a short flatwater float above it's major gorge. The run is pleasant, if slow, but the scenery can often be outstanding. The river also cuts away from the road for a good section of it's length, which can allow for solitude and a rare chance to get a glimpse of silent countryside. Logistics are pretty simple too; the put in is at the bridge below the Song Kon 2 hydro electric power plant, and the takeout is at the 14-G bridge. Simple and straightforward. It could be possible to continue down the river past the highway but the river quickly ends in a lake, which necessitates a kilometer or two of flat water paddling to reach the road on the other side. Except for at the immediate start of the run, there are zero rapids on this run so it could realistically be run from minimum to just short of flood levels.
More to come soon....
